Jeanne Mary Kanevsky (née Stolcis) passed away peacefully, with dignity and grace, on May 29, 2019 in Comox, BC, with her daughters at her side.
Jeanne was born in Minnesota in 1923 and grew up in the Midwest during the Great Depression. She earned her Master's degree in Social Work at the University of Chicago before joining the U.S. Navy Waves during WWII. She met her husband, Joe, the love of her life, in Korea while serving in the Red Cross. He was a decorated combat pilot and Wing Commander in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. They were married in 1953 and had two daughters, Lannie and Gina. Unfortunately, Joe, a test pilot, died in a crash shortly after Gina's birth in 1957. Jeanne continued her life of service to others as a Social Worker in Monterey, California. She raised her daughters there until 1970 when her political conscience inspired her to leave the US and settle in Courtenay, BC. Jeanne was a psychiatric social worker at the Mental Health Clinic for over 20 years. She was beloved by her clients for her insight and support. Throughout those years, and after retiring, she and Gina developed Dove Creek Farm as an active horse breeding and training center. Jeanne was a respected authority on pedigrees of both show and racehorses.
Throughout her life, Jeanne generously and continuously provided a loving home to dozens of furry friends, from barn swallows to donkeys. Second, only to her family, they were the joy of her life.
Jeanne was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Norman Kanevsky, and her brothers Louis and Richard Stolcis. She is survived by Gina and Lannie Kanevsky, and Lannie's fiancé, Charles J. Fisher, Jr.
Jeanne's family would like to express immense gratitude to the staff at Oceanview in Comox for their extraordinary care and compassion, and to Joey the cat, for his endless comfort.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 14th, 2019, at 1 pm at Dove Creek Farm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Oceanview's Pet Care Program would be appreciated.
