Joan Karen Nishi of Courtenay, B.C. passed away March 13th, 2020 at The Oceanview in Comox, B.C.
Joan was born July 1937 in Moose Jaw, Sask. to Jack and Olive. She was the oldest of nine children. Joan spent many happy summers at family gatherings, riding horses and playing baseball.
Later she married and had three sons. In 1971, they moved their family to Courtenay, B.C. At this time, she started working at the Courtenay Post Office.
Later she met Peter and they were married in 1979. Peter and Joan loved to travel, they did many road trips around B.C. They took bus trips to Reno and Vegas to see shows, and to do a little gambling. Joan especially loved Hawaii with many fond memories with Pete, her brother Ted and his wife Marg.
During this time, Joan and Peter became half owners of A&W on Cliffe Ave. She met and made lifelong friends there.
Joan took pride in her family. She was very proud of all of their accomplishments young and old. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, then on to her great grandchildren. It wasn't unusual for her to drop everything just to be with them.
She was the "go to" about anything. If she didn't know off hand, we could be sure it was written down in a book. That was her special sparkle.
Joan is survived by her sons, Kelly (Cindy), Darcy (Linda), grandchildren Daryl, Jamie, Krissy and Matthew. Great grandchildren Gabrielle, Linken, Grady and Harlie. Sister Marylin, brothers Ted, Alan, Terry, Daryl, Calvin and spouses. She is survived by many nieces and nephews who all had a special place in her heart.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Peter, son Stacy (infant), brother Robert (infant), brother Larry and her parents Jack and Olive.
We would like to thank Joan's special friend, Val, for all the years she spent with Joan watching "Dancing with the Stars" and sitting on the front porch enjoying the sunshine.
Thank you to all the homecare staff who took part in caring for Joan in her home. A special thank you to Oceanview's staff for enjoying Joan's humour and making her comfortable and loved during her short stay with them.
