In loving memory ~
John (Jack) slipped away quietly in his sleep after a long struggle with dementia.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Jeannette of 64 years, his daughters Jacqueline (Mark) Defoort, Janine Lafontaine and Jennifer (Joseph) Hertz. He will also be missed by his grandchildren; Jack Defoort, Eric Hertz, Joshua Hertz and Jolene Lafontaine as well as eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings Les, Dan (Sherri) and Marilyn.
Jack was known for his sense of humour, curiosity and his many stories. He led an interesting life so he had some stories to tell. He was always up for a challenge and had many different jobs throughout his life. He was the Jack in 'a jack of all trades'. Although his jobs were too numerous to mention, he spent many years as a grader operator and carpenter. He built his own home at Longbow Lake where the family lived. He and Jeannette eventually relocated to Manitoba and then settled permanently in the Comox Valley.
Jack was a family man. His wife, children and extended family were very important to him. He was always there for advice (especially to his daughters) or to lend a hand when it was needed. Children and dogs brought him joy. He always had a dog or two. Many of them were rescue dogs and they were able to live their best lives being spoiled by him.
Jack enjoyed his many years with the Vancouver Island Musicfest as much as the other volunteers loved having him there. He was a member of the Lion's Club, volunteered with the seniors at St. Joe's Hospital and donated blood yearly while he was able to.
Jack was passionate about hunting and loved the outdoors. There was always moose, deer or partridge in the freezer growing up and the partridge feet provided some lively conversation during show and tell for his daughters in elementary school.
He owned the dance floor when he danced and he loved country music. The country music soothed his soul in the past few years when things got rough.
The family is eternally grateful to Doctor Gee for his kind and compassionate support as well as the home care workers that came daily to assist with his care. With their assistance and Jeannette's devotion and unwavering care, Jack was able to live comfortably at home until he passed. Also a special thank you to Josh Hertz, Alison Sokalski and Jackie Defoort for being there when they were needed most.
In lieu of flowers, please raise a glass to Jack and think of a good "Jack" story. There were many.
