b: October 13, 1937---d: August 15, 2017

Our Dad passed away in the early morning of Tuesday August 15, 2017 at 3:20am in the presence of his family holding his hand. We said we loved him and it was ok to go. We’ll take care of mom and Jesus is waiting for you. Upon which, he drew his last earthly breath.

He leaves to mourn his beautiful wife of 56 years, Roxie Hicks and four children. Carla(Croft) Stanfield, Darryl Hicks, Lisa(David) Loewen all of Courtenay and Ryan (Jiney) Hicks of Vancouver, BC. His eight grandchildren, Brandon, Cory and Janine Galandy, Katie and Anthony Hicks, Isaac Loewen, Matthew and Jonathon Stanfield and two great grandchildren, Sayble Galandy and Bentley Stanfield. He also leaves behind three surviving siblings, Charles(Helen) Hicks, Dale (Diane)Hicks and Suzanne(Murray) Gould all from Ontario as well as many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, Harold and Dorothy Hicks, of Dunnville Ontario and one sister, Melonie Rothermund, of Ontario.

Dad was born on October 13, 1937 and grew up on a dairy farm in the small hamlet of Port Maitland just a few miles outside of Dunnville, Ontario. This is where he met mom while she worked at a cafe near the local lighthouse and they married in 1961. At the young age of seventeen, he began working for his uncle in the upholstery business and soon became a self-employed upholsterer working for himself. This is how he supported himself and his growing family. We rarely went without but never lived extravagantly. In his early married life he became a Christian and gave his heart and life to Jesus. From then on, anyone that he talked with also heard about Jesus and his offer of grace and eternal life. In 1976 he moved the family west to Alberta. Through a suggestion from friends that he had met there, he eventually moved further west to Vancouver Island and settled in the Courtenay area. He worked in his upholstery business with mom from the various homes that they bought and sold in Courtenay. Many, many local people have a piece of furniture that his hands carefully restored to new life. It was like watching an artist at work. He worked without complaint til he could not work anymore and put down his hammer for the last time. He passed away a few months later, losing his battle to cancer. We will miss him so much.

We would like to thank all the care-aids, nurses, hospice workers along with Dr. Burgess and Dr. Hunter for their gentle and caring help with dad. A special thanks goes out to Dr. Susan Hunter for her home visits that put us at ease, as well as, the love and tenderness she showed our father to make him comfortable in the last week of his life. Thank you to Todd at Piercy’s for his professionalism as he helped guide us through the many decisions we needed to make in the days before the funeral. To Dave and Lydia Koleba(Evangelical Free Church), for conducting the service through message and music, Thank you.

To everyone who provided meals, cards of sympathy, phone calls, flowers, hugs and tears, it was so heart warming that you all grieved with us during this difficult time. Much love sent your way.

We laid Dad to rest on Saturday August 19, 2017. With a beautiful service held at Piercy’s Funeral Home, a graveside service at the Courtenay Civic Cemetery and a social reception out in Merville. To all who came, many thanks, Dad would have loved it, many Blessings to you all!
