John Stanley (Stan) Hamer

May 28, 1924 – July 26, 2014

Stan passed away peacefully, at the age of 90. Predeceased by his parents, his brothers Ron and Eric, and, in 2011, his soul mate and loving wife, Frances. Survived by son Michael, daughters Janice (Al) and Catriona (Arne) and grandchildren Chris, Nic, Kieren, Hayley and Ethan.

Born in Chester, England, Stan and Frances emigrated to Canada in 1957. They landed in Winnipeg, but quickly headed West to their much beloved North Vancouver. Stan moved to the Comox Valley in January 2014.

Dad worked for the Prudential Assurance Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. A very active retirement indeed! Dad learnt computers, and then spent his time volunteering at Silver Harbour teaching seniors computer skills. Stan and Frances enjoyed their numerous bus tours and particularly loved their retreat “Toad Hall” on Saltspring Island. A regular at Cheers and the Capilano Pantry, he befriended many staff. Stan cherished his long standing friendships in Canada and England, and New Year’s celebrations with best friends.

Dad loved the outdoors. There were many stories of long bike trips throughout England. He was an avid fisherman and hiker, regularly trekking up Grouse Mountain well before the Grouse Grind existed. He was active with the Scouts for over 35 years and treasured his days as a Scout leader.

The family is very grateful to Majid, Casa Loma, Yolanda and Imelda for providing tremendous support and compassion to Dad.
