November 17, 1933 - February 11, 2021
After a brief illness John died peacefully in North Island Hospital, Courtenay. Born in Dundee Scotland, John, along with cousins Mildred and Margot, immigrated to Toronto in 1949.
John met the love of his life Margaret, a fellow Scot, in Montreal where they were married in 1958. In 1963 they moved to Vancouver, then to Winnipeg, before settling in Comox, BC in 1972. In all of these communities John and Margaret enjoyed music, singing, and Scottish Country dancing.
During the 1970's the Bowies owned and operated "The Moorings" restaurant in Comox. With John at the 'helm' and Margaret in the 'galley' they were a dynamite team - Sunday night smorgasbords were always soldout.
After a brief hiatus, they opened 'The Homestead' in Courtenay in 1984, once again a very successful restaurant with a loyal following who appreciated the Bowie's high standards of service and quality. Retiring in 1992 they enjoyed many years of travel together.
A very private, quiet gentleman John enjoyed reading, classical music, and tennis. In June 2020 John moved back to Comox, residing at Stevenson Place. Enjoying being back in Comox he road his bike around town and took brisk walks to the marina.
John is survived by cousins Mildred Hood, Margot Barnett, and their families, as well as many friends across Canada, USA, UK, and Europe. As per John's wishes there is to be no service and his ashes will be interred at the Mount Royal Cemetery, The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Montreal beside his beloved wife Margaret who predeceased John February 16, 2012.
Donations in John's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
