April 23, 2021
John passed away peacefully in Comox on April 23rd 2021 just shy of his 90th birthday. Born in Fairview Alberta, John spent his youth growing up in the interior of BC. In 1954 he joined the RCAF as a photo tech and was posted to CFB Greenwood.
There he met his soon to be wife Phyllis who was also in the air force. They were married while stationed in Germany. Upon returning to Canada he formed his aerial survey company which saw him mapping and flying all over Canada while living in Ontario with his family.
He eventually retired to Vancouver Island where he spent many years sailing the coast, even living on a float house for a few years on Gilford Island.
As much as John enjoyed exploring the island one of his favourite pastimes was bridge. In his latter years you could always find him at the Evergreen or d'Esterre centres enjoying a card game.
John also enjoyed reminiscing and would often regale us with adventurous stories from his youth whenever we were all gathered around the table. Everyone who knew him could hear when John was coming as he was always whistling a tune.
John is survived by his children Darlene and Ken (Carmen). He was a loving Opa to his grandchildren, Dillon (Genevieve), Dustin, Alyssa (Lee), and Maxine and was blessed to have 5 great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his loving younger sister Gina.
The family is thankful for the compassionate care that John received at Mountain View where he spent his last few years, and we are grateful to have spent time with him in his final days. As per John's request and Covid-19 restrictions there will be no service.
