February 16, 1938 - September 16, 2019
We are saddened to announce the passing of Kai Erik Mahrt on Sept. 16, 2019 at the Comox Valley Hospital. He was 81.
Erik was born on Feb. 16, 1938 in Denmark. He was blessed with a group of loving siblings, Ib, Liska, Christian, Henning and Gimbe, and they were raised by their wonderful parents Jorgen and Liska Mahrt. The Mahrt clan was passionate about sailing and from a young age Erik raced sailboats with his father, siblings and as an adult with his own two sons. This love of sailing led him to train as a master sailboat builder and he built many sailboats in Denmark and in Victoria, BC from 1954-1968
In 1968 he began teaching and he taught in the Comox Valley from 1968-1999. He spent the majority of his career teaching at Georges P. Vanier in Courtenay. In later years Erik took up running and became a passionate distance runner, running his first half-marathon when he was in his mid-70's. A phenomenally gifted craftsman, Erik built their family home, and always had a project or two on the go, especially when visiting his children.
Erik is predeceased by his wife Yvonne Mahrt. He is lovingly remembered by his children Rod (Jo-Anne), Greg (Anne), and Liska (Jeff). Erik was also blessed to be the proud grandfather to Courtney, Brendan, Alex, Alysha, Zara and Keira.
