Louis Bernhard Beduz

July 2, 2017

September 13, 1927 – July 2, 2017

It is a great sense of loss that came with the passing of Louis (Lou) Beduz at home on July 2. He was predeceased after 64 years of marriage by the love of his life, Margaret (Meta) Beduz and his only sibling, Roy Beduz, and is survived by his 5 children, Lucy (Lloyd) Gibson of Prince George, B.C., Anne Jackson of Creston, B.C., Mark Beduz of Calgary, AB, Barb (Frank) Wloka of Creston, B.C. and Angela (Luc) Laprairie of Williams Lake, B.C. plus 8 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren, of whom he was very proud. Louis was born in Kimberley, the eldest son of Mark and Evelyn Beduz, and graduated with a BA in English from UBC, where he met Meta. Earning a teaching certificate, Louis initially taught in Kimberley where he and Meta started their family. In 1957, he moved to Union Bay as principal of Union Bay Elementary and then to Comox where Louis served as principal of Comox Junior Secondary from 1965 to 1973 and of Lake Trail Junior Secondary for 1973/74. During this time, he also earned a Master of Education degree. In 1974 he accepted the post of Superintendent of Schools for the Creston-Kaslo school district, a post he held until forced to take a medical leave in 1982. Despite health issues, Louis remained active in the local United Church plus became very serious about his Bridge playing. During his retirement years, Louis ran multiple Bridge classes to introduce new players to the game which he so enjoyed, as well as travelling to tournaments with Meta and his children. Meta and Louis delighted in travelling, putting many miles on their camper vans and crossing the continent multiple times. They also enjoyed trips overseas, either as a couple or with family members. Louis took great pleasure in gardening; planning new plantings, pouring over the catalogues to decide what to plant and where. He was an artist, creating many paintings that are treasured by his family. And he was an avid reader, sharing that enjoyment with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family is planning a private service later in the summer. They kindly request no flowers, but would appreciate a donation to the Stephen Lewis Foundation in Louis’ memory.
