Louis Carl Sherwood

Resting comfortably at home in his 76th year at Courtenay, B.C., formerly of Kitchener, Ontario. Born in Saint John, N.B., he later grew up in London, ON. Survived by his loving wife Cathy (Moir), brother George and many nephews. Predeceased by his brother Edward and sister Lorna.

Carl was a veteran of 9 years in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps having served with; Royal Cdn. Dragoons, 8th Cdn. Hussars (Princess Louise) and Lord Strathcona Horse (LdSH) at home and abroad, including Germany, Africa and service with the United Nations in the Sinai.

Upon leaving the Army, Carl was active in his family construction businesses in Kitchener-Waterloo for many years prior to retirement. Later, he served as the manager of the K-W Masonic Temple. Carl had a discerning eye for form and colour, which served him well in constructing houses, running painting crews as a drywall taper. His eye was second to none in drywalling, in which he trained many people, who went on to start their own businesses. Carl also introduced the mechanical tools to the drywall trade in KW. His sense of colour and form was celebrated in his collection of paintings.

Carl loved animals, whether riding to the hunt or rough housing with his dogs Shandar, Cognac and Chancy.

Carl was also a distinguished Freemason, serving as a life member and officer in Twin City Lodge 509 as Wor. Master; Kitchener Chapter 117 – First Principal and Gr. Stwd. He was a no nonsense coach and mentor to many young Freemasons. Later, Carl was the inspiration in writing instructional manuals for ritual and symbolism in the Knights Templar where he served Vallette 64 as Presiding Preceptor and an elected member of Gr. Exec. for the Sov. Grt. Priory of Canada. These manuals and Powerpoint are still used across Canada today. In other bodies, he fulfilled leadership roles in the Royal and Select Masters, Conestoga Council 17 – T.I.M., Gr. Stwd., Gr. Cond of Council; Edwin York Rite College 59 – Gov., Secty, Treas; HRAKTP – High Priest; Ont. Priory 49 – Knight York Cross of Honour; AMD – Medwayosh Council 62 – Sov. Master, Kt. Comm.; Shrine – Mocha Temple. Affiliated member of Cyrus Chapter, RAM and Alpha Council 11, RSM, Courtenay, B.C.

Scottish Rite Masonry; Life member of Royal City Lodge of Perfection 14°, Guelph Chapter Rose Croix 18°, Moore Sovereign Consistory, Hamilton 32 °.

Carl Sherwood will be missed by his many friends who enjoyed his company and insights into life. We will look forward to sharing a cup of coffee when you reach home once again.
