MALEK, Marie Elizabeth

We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother and "Oma" Marie Elizabeth Malek.

Born Marie Elizabeth Mueller in Niedenstein, Germany on July 11, 1925, Marie married Joseph Malek in July, 1946. In 1953, the couple emigrated to Vancouver with their daughter Dagmar and son Alard.

Marie worked as a homemaker and caregiver to numerous children in Kerrisdale. In the mid-1980s, she moved to Courtenay, where she spent many happy years transforming her yard into an oasis of prizewinning roses, dahlias, and other beautiful flowers.

She loved to entertain, and enjoyed baking traditional German cakes and desserts, which she often served to friends over coffee at her home. She kept in close touch with her friends and relatives in Germany, and also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, usually donating her creations to charity fundraisers. She had a sharp wit, compassion for humanity, and a strong sense of independence.

In the spring of 2000, Marie became debilitated with osteoporosis.

With the help of many wonderful home support people from the Vancouver Island Health Authority, she was able to live independently in her home until her last day with us.

Marie will be dearly missed by her friends in Courtenay and her family in Niedenstein, and by her son Alard Malek (Diana Mossen), daughter Dagmar McKenzie (Neil), grandson Curtis Foreman (Lindsie Tomlinson), and great-grandson Dante Foreman.

A celebration of Marie's life will be held at Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Road on Friday, June 10 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the SPCA would be appreciated.
