Mary Jean passed away peacefully on January 2, 2018, a few weeks before her 92nd birthday.
She was born in Keswick, Ontario and grew up with childhood memories of the farm and long summers swimming in Lake Simcoe. After graduating from Newmarket High School she attended Toronto Western Hospital Nursing College and worked as an RN in Newmarket and Victoria BC. She married John Edwards in 1952, and with him lived in Napanee, Newmarket, Winnipeg, Victoria and finally in Comox.
The constant in her life was her work with the United Church, becoming very involved in all aspects of the various church activities in each community. She was also an avid traveller, loved to cook and loved to read.
Predeceased by her father (Franklin Marritt) her mother (Bertha Marritt) brother Ted Marritt and sister Lois Sedore.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years John Edwards, daughters Lois Flawse (Randy) and Martha Gingerich (John), grandchildren Liz Brown (Nigel), Andrew Flawse (Shere), David Flawse (Lindsay Clement), Sarah Lenson (Brett), Julia Gingerich (Brendan Purdy) and Emily Gingerich.
Her five great-grandchildren are Nathan and Olivia Flawse and Cordelia, Cedric and Felix Lenson. Her brother-in-law Davis Edwards (Marjorie), sister-in-law Yettie Edwards and nephew John Sedore (Heather McGill) live in Courtenay and were very close to her.
She had a very large extended family and friends living all over Canada who will miss her, too.
Our thanks goes to those who cared for her through her illness. Our own amazing caregivers as well as the team from Valleycare Medical, and the wonderful nursing and professional staff at Comox Valley Hospital.
A service will be held at Piercy's - Mt Washington Funeral Home on January 18, 2018 at 11:00 am.
