McAstocker – Mary Lavinia

(nee Murrell)

We sadly announce the death of Mary (Mudge) McAstocker. She passed away on September 8th, 2007 at Cummings Home, Courtenay.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leo; son-in-law, Horst Breuer and her great-grandson, Nolan Breuer.

She is survived by her five children: Tara Breuer, Courtenay, Dinah (Mike) Dickie, Ucluelet, Wendy (Glen) Andison, Thetis Island, Corey (Mia) McAstocker, Comox and Jonathan (Laura) McAstocker, Salt Spring Island; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary was born on April 12, 1914 in Earl Soham, Suffolk, England. She grew up on a farm where horses still ploughed the fields. She was educated in England, then emigrated to Canada in 1939 where she settled in Trail, BC. There she met and married Leo McAstocker. The lure of commercial fishing took them to Steveston, then onto Thetis Island where together they carved out a life and raised their family. After being widowed, she spent ten years on Salt Spring Island, and the remainder of her life in Comox.

She will be missed as equally as she was admired and respected, by all who knew her.

A Memorial Service will be held at Piercy’s Funeral Home, 440 England Avenue, Courtenay on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to SOS Children’s Villages Canada, 200, 244 rue Rideau Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1N 5Y3.
