May the road rise up to meet you.

and the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields

and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

(an Irish blessing)

Mary was a loving friend, sister, wife and mother who left us in just the nick of time (because we couldn't bear for her to suffer another day) and will be profoundly missed by everyone. She was definitely known for her spunk, her determination, her profoundly thoughtful heart. She handed out homemade muffins, warm hugs and slightly inappropriate pats on the bum to friends and strangers everywhere. Mary loved to cook and paint and daily stalk the library for the latest books on the Royal family. She adored Thrift shops and was quite famous for her collection of thrifted silk scarves. She truly was an enlivening spirit who made friends everywhere. She had a knack for sending out goodness and all that was happy within her. Every baby was kissed, every hospital patient was visited on her volunteer rounds and all souls were gifted a cup of tea in her home. One of the deepest longings of the human heart is to be seen and Mary saw everyone. Mary was quite addicted to cards and wrote to family and friends little notes in the cards she collected obsessively - she would pen her birthday notes for loved ones years in advance and file them neatly away in drawers in her desk. Possibly the original pioneer of recycling, Mary also loved to 'regift presents' given to her and if you were lucky you would find yourself on Christmas morning unwrapping a treasure you had originally bought for her.

Those who knew her longest will remember Mary the most however for her poignant devotion to her husband Neil. Diagnosed with Parkinson's in his early 40's, Mary tirelessly cared for him for 28 years at home with unwavering love. She would push him in his wheelchair to every bookshop in town and together they would sit up in bed at night eating chocolate and watching episodes of Morse. On the night of his death she crawled into bed with him and held him in her arms until he fell into his last forever sleep. Her heart never quite recovered after that and not a day went by where she wouldn't say how much she missed him.

On Sunday, November 11 Mary's own weary heart finally gave out peacefully in her sleep after a courageous battle with Parkinson's, Arthritis and multiple infections. And in the same breath - OUR hearts will never quite be the same and not a day will ever go by that we don't miss our spunky, loveable Irish Mom. No buildings will be named after her, no monuments erected in her honour but each day will be a lifetime without her mischievous smile. She leaves behind her daughter Madelyn (Peter), son Marc (Carolyn)-Mary's 'second daughter'; her grandchildren Tess (Ken) and Noah; brother Philip (Francine); sister Barbara (Chris); sister-in-law Maureen, nephews and nieces Lawrence, Jessie, Seamus, Una, Sidonie, and Nora. Please join us in remembering Mary by visiting our memorial at www.piercysmtwashingtonfuneral.com.

A very Irish Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 13th (her wedding anniversary) from 1 - 4 pm at 3856 Warren Ave. Royston, BC complete with a friends and family potluck, Sherry and gingerale cocktails, (Mary's favorite drink) and a 'make your own goody bag' candy bar.
