It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Dad.
Suds had an adventurous and varied life. Born to Laura and Gordon Sutherland in Vancouver, he spent his childhood hunting and fishing with his father at various logging camps. After graduating from Lord Byng High school Suds enrolled in technical school where he became proficient at almost everything mechanical.
Suds enlisted in the RCAF during WW2. He served as an engine mechanic at Lytton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire, England. After the war Suds worked in the logging industry following his father's path but decided it was not for him. He re-enlisted and became a member of the Search and Rescue on Sea Island and later became a flight engineer on the Argus where he logged thousands of hours.
Suds met his wife Bernice in Summerside PEI while stationed there. They moved to Greenwood NS and started the time of their lives together. He was transferred to CFB Comox (19 Wing) in 1967 where he was lucky to remain for the rest of his service. They joined the Comox Golf Club and remained members until they could no longer golf. Suds was an avid skier all his life, starting as a teenager on Hollyburn mountain in West Vancouver and continuing into his 90th year on Mt. Washington.
After retiring from the military he worked at the Comox Golf Club as the greens keeper for several years. He once owned a commercial fishing boat called the "Chiquita Banana". Suds loved fixing things. He rebuilt 3 BMW Isettas and worked on a few more. Throughout his life Suds was known as the "go to" guy if you needed something fixed.
Always social, he enjoyed tipping a few with his friends at the Wing and the golf club.
There weren't too many instances that Suds didn't find some kind of humour. Even at the end he always had a quick witted comment for his wonderful caregivers at the hospital.
Suds is predeceased by his wife Bernice and his brother Gordon. He sadly leaves behind daughters Jan (Charlie) and Lisa. Grand children Laura (Mat) and Ryan. Great grandchildren Conan and Duke. His sister Doreen and her children, Patti, Mark (Sue), Paul (Debbie). He also leaves behind many dear friends that remained close by in the final days.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wainberg and his staff for taking excellent care of our Dad.
There will be a Celebration at the 888 Wing on Saturday November 13th, 2021 from 2-4. Current Covid protocols in place. In lieu of flowers please be generous this Remembrance Day.
