McKenzie (Mac) Witzel
July 5, 1921 - July 3, 2007
Mac died peacefully at home with his beloved wife Kae at his side. He is predeceased by his first wife Inamae (1986), brother Bill and sister Pearl, and daughter-in-law Catherine and leaves a large family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends to mourn his passing. Mac leaves sisters Gladys, Kay and Anna. He also leaves his children Frances (children Deidre, Heidi, Brian); Heather; Rose (husband Corky) and children Christina, Sara, Brent; Fred (children Kim, John Michael, Kristen); David (wife Mary-Lou) and children Alex, Kerry; Allen (wife Fran) and children Danielle, Ben; and Bruce (wife Fran) and children Kristen, Doug. Mac married Kae in 1987 and embraced her daughters Chrystal, Susan, Catherine, and Lesley and their children as part of his ever-growing family.
Mac retired as a senior foreman from the Department of Highways in 1982 after 35 years of service, and served as a Director on the boards of the Courtenay Recreational Association and Sunnydale Golf Club.
Mac loved his family above all things, but found time to golf, play bridge (masterfully), and garden. He had a life-long passion for the Knights of Columbus. (Mac held all positions in the Knights of Columbus both locally and provincially, and was the past State Deputy of this charitable organization).
Mac will be forever missed by those who knew him for his warm and caring heart, his compassion, his fierce loyalty, and his noble and gentle spirit. Mac’s approach to life is summed up by one of his children when she says “ His heart and his house were always open”.
In lieu of flowers, Mac and Kae would like donations to go to St. Vincent De Paul Conference in care of Christ the King Church in Courtenay, BC.
Funeral services for Mac will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on Saturday, July 7th at 1:00 p.m.
