May 21, 1940 - September 23, 2019
Merrill was born in Frelighsburg, Quebec on May 21, 1940, passed away at Comox Valley Hospital on Monday, September 23, 2019. Predeceased by his parents Donald and Beatrice; siblings Donald, Donna, Ruby, Charles and Joyce; his first wife Beatrice and his partner Brenda. Merrill is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Helen; stepsons Tony and John; daughters Sheila, Sharon, Sheryl and stepdaughter Heather; grandchildren Dara, Brea, Justina, Ocean, Sky and Heaven; his brother Eddie; sister Lorraine and many nieces and nephews.
Merrill worked on farms since he was 8 years old, beginning in Quebec, then P.E.I., Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C., ultimately coming to Vancouver Island. He worked for 16 years at the Comox Mall and 13 years at the Driftwood Mall. Merrill was an extremely hard worker and enjoyed small equipment. He loved biking in his younger years, camping in the motorhome, listening to music, specially Elvis Presley, coffee at Tim Hortons (he called it "his office"), phone calls from daughters and grandchildren in Ontario and Quebec and time spent with family and his siblings. He loved all his children and grandchildren very much. Merrill was a lovable person, with a great sense of humour, often singing around the house and washing his vehicles so they were always shining. He will be remembered as well for his immaculate workshop.
A Celebration of Merrill's Life will be held at Central Evangelical Free Church, 765 McPhee Avenue, Courtenay, on Saturday, October 12th at 2 pm.
Flowers gratefully declined, in consideration of donations in his memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
