It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Murray Glenn Shackel, on July 15, 2016 following a 10 month battle with lung cancer. Born in Killarney, Manitoba, Murray was 1 of 11 children. He was a member of the Armed Forces until 1963 with he moved to the Comox Valley. Dad loved the Comox Valley, his home for the past 53 years. Murray was very active in the community, 4-H and the Lion’s Club. He was an active person in the Black Creek Lion’s Club riding horseback from Victoria to Merville to raise money for different charities. On May 19, 1989, Murray received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated Humanitarian Services from the Lion’s Club International Foundation.

In 2014 he was very honoured to have been chosen Citizen of the Year (The Lifetime Achievement Award).

He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Debra. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Peggy (Doug) and Jo-Ann. His memory will be treasured by his five grand-children, Michelle, Jonathon, Matthew, Octavia and Erik.

We would like to thank Dr. Thompson and the amazing staff on the 3rd floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital who were so comforting for dad in his final few days of life. A celebration of life for Murray will be announced at a later date at Merville Hall, a place for which he had so many fine memories.
