June 8, 1929 - October 27, 2022
In loving memory ~
It is with a sense of loss, sadness and love that the family of Myrtle Lillian Capling announces her passing on October 27, 2022. She was born in 1929 on Creekbank Farm near Alma, Ontario. She was the first in her family to go to high school and boarded with relatives in Elmira to do so. She married John Douglas Capling in 1951 and, because he worked for the armed forces, the family lived in many cities across Canada. Her first son, Stephen, was born in Churchill, Manitoba and she always had a special place for polar bears in her home décor. She and John had four boys and in addition to being stationed in Churchill, the family also spent time in Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, Centralia, and Barrie, before ending up in Comox just prior to John's retirement from the armed forces. Myrtle loved Vancouver Island and eventually settled in a home on the water at Little River.
Myrtle had a long career in banking and worked for the CIBC in Courtenay for more than two decades before retiring in 1994. She was well-liked by both the customers and the other bank employees. After her formal retirement from the bank, she worked for another five years as a retirement income specialist.
She was an extremely hard-working woman and in addition to holding down a full-time job, she looked after four growing boys and her husband. Myrtle was very generous, yet frugal, as a result of growing up in the depression era and having to make ends meet on just one income while the boys were still young children.
Like her father before her, she gardened right into her last summer. She delighted in growing plants and flowers. Over the years, her gardens included raspberries, strawberries, beans, potatoes, apples and cherries. Later in her life, Myrtle was especially fond of her fig tree. In her retirement years, she liked to help out other seniors. She baked and cooked, and drove other seniors around or to appointments.
She was close to her family in Ontario and she did her best to travel back to visit them often. Her niece's and nephew's birthdays were always remembered with a card and a gift.
She was predeceased by her husband John and her son Stephen, her brother John Wagner, sisters Mabel Koch, Verna Nelson, and Beatrice Witzel. She was well loved by her sons Jamie, Jeff and Roger, her grandchildren Michael and Jodie, and her great grandchildren Ellie and Finn. Finn just five, hugged her so vigorously the last time he visited, he almost toppled her over.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Food Bank would be greatly appreciated. The family will hold a small gathering to celebrate Myrtle's life in the Spring.
There will also be a time of remembering Myrtle as part of the Sunday Morning Worship Service at Comox United Church on Sunday, December 11th at 10am.
