Paul Goodenough Bayly passed away at the Nanaimo General Hospital with his family by his side on November 10th. He was born in Comox Hospital on April 10, 1929 to parents Vincent Goodenough and Stella (Sackville). Predeceased by father Vincent in a farm accident in 1940, mother Stella in 1987, brother Vincent and sister-in-law Eleanor in 1981, brother Brian in 2011, and beloved son Wayne Paul in 2001. Paul attended early school years in Cumberland. His pioneer family moved from England to the Courtenay area in the early 1900's and his parents farmed in Happy Valley/Courtenay. Paul went to Port Alberni at the age of 17 and worked odd jobs until he started his pulpmill career with the then Bloedel Stewart and Welch pulpmill in 1947.
While in Port Alberni, he took up the saxophone and played in small dance bands. In early years, Paul also played sax in the Stu Storrie Dance Band in the old Pygmy dance hall. He played in the Nanaimo Concert band also. Paul joined the H.R. MacMillan Export Company (Harmac) in 1950, where he met Emma and were married in 1953 - this year celebrated 66 years of happy marriage. Paul became a Supervisor at the Harmac mill and retired after 40 years - Paul was a member of the startup crew in 1950. He enjoyed the friendship of many friends there. When Paul retired from the mill, he and Emma moved from Harewood to the house they built in Boat Harbour/Cedar. They travelled, Paul enjoyed fishing, boating, watching the sea life in front of their home.
Surviving Paul is his wife Emma; son Richard(Vanessa); grandchildren Derek, John and Lia; great grandchildren Keenan, Bella (Curtis), Devin; Nephew David (Joan); niece Susanne (Brett Koonts).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul's memory to the Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the SPCA. A Memorial will be held at a later date.
