June 5, 1938 - January 4, 2019
It is with heavy hearts the family of Ray Hammell mourn his passing at home on Jan 4, 2019 with his wife Nicki by his side. He struggled with Pulmonary Fibrosis and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. Throughout his illness he continued to bless us with his smile and sense of humour. Ray leaves a large loving family; his sisters Lois (Jack), Marlene (Willi), Nicki his wife of 54 years, son Bernie, daughter Tammy (Rick), daughter in law Maria, grandchildren Santina, Sienna, Joel, Jamie and Danielle, sister in law Harriette (Ray), nieces Colleen (Peter), Loreen (Walter), Janet (Dave) and Sandi (Steve) and nephew Tim. Ray leaves multiple great nieces and nephews in both Canada and the United States.

Ray was born in Macklin Saskatchewan where he spent the first seven years of his life before moving to the Comox Valley. During and after high school he worked numerous jobs before starting his career at the Elk Falls Pulp Mill. In 1964 he would marry his 'Yankee' sweetheart Nicki and in 1967 they would move with their young son Bernie to Gold River. Daughter Tammy joined the family in the spring of 1968 to complete our family. Throughout the years, Ray's community involvement was extensive. Ray was an avid curler, hockey goalie....heeheehee, golf enthusiast (founding and executive member of the Gold River Golf Course), baseball player extraordinaire with the Gold River Legion, Charter and Life Member of the Kinsmen Club of Gold River and Life member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 270. Ray was active in Navy League of Canada and served on the executive of Branch 270 in many capacities. One of Ray's greatest passions was the involvement in the Remembrance Day Celebrations of Branch 270.

Ray leaves behind so many wonderful memories and experiences for family and friends. Our family welcomes you to attend a Celebration of Life on January 18, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the Comox Legion Branch 160 (1825 Comox Ave). In lieu of flowers, any donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Society or the Comox Valley Hospice Society.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us through our journey in this difficult time.
