Rick passed away peacefully June 29th at the North Island Hospital in Courtenay. He was 82. He was predeceased by his parents, Esmond and Doris, and by his son, Jim. He is survived by his wife, Jacquie, his son, David, and daughter, Yolanda (Graham). He is also survived by two grandsons, Nathan and Jerad (Marcia) and three great grandchildren. Also surviving him are his two brothers, lewis and Don, and three sisters, Joan, Bernice and Laura.

Rick was born and raised in Vancouver. He started working when he was nine and was expected to pay room and board with most of what he earned until he left home. He was never long without work. He began his teaching career when he was 18 after attending Normal School in Vancouver. Over the years he taught in several B.C. school districts. At 34, he was teaching in Alert Bay where he met his future wife, Jacquie, who was tea.ching there as well. They were married a year later in 1971 in Richmond, B.C.. In 1972, they moved to Mission where Rick taught typing, English and Social Studies at Hatzic Jr. Secondary School.

During his years in Mission, he spent nights and summers at UBC until he completed his BA in commerce. He then attended Simon Fraser nights in the new MBA program designed for students who were already in professions. After graduating he was asked to instruct UBC students studying to become Registered Industrial accountants in evening courses.

In 1981 he and Jacquie moved to the Comox Valley where Rick taught at Cumberland Jr. and then at Vanier until he retired in 1996. Throughout his teaching career Rick was active in the schools' extracurricular activities and school fundraisers.

For a few years in the 1960's he left teaching for health reasons and worked for the National Trust in Calgary and for Ralph Bell Shipyards in Alert Bay. In later years he ran his own business doing income taxes for individuals and businesses. Rick loved life. He took great pleasure telling jokes and stories. For many years he, Jacquie and their German Shepherds explored the area's logging roads.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a good friend to many. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Private prayers were said for Rick when he was laid to rest. Those who wish to remember him may do so by making donations in his name to their favorite charities.
