Ross Jorgen Hansen

July 20, 1918 – May 11, 2007

Ross Jorgen Hansen passed away on May 11, 2007 at the age of 88. Lovingly remembered by his wife Deborah; daughter, Loreta of Courtenay; sons, Curt of Comox and Colin (Laura) of Vancouver; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and sister, Sybil Goldie of Port Alberni. Predeceased by his parents Eivind and Marie Hansen; sisters: Margaret Weeks, Evelyn Rutherford and Hilma MacDonald; and daughter-in-law, Lynne Hansen.

Ross was born in New Westminster and moved with his family to Port Alberni, one month later. In the depression years he bought his first boat and became a West Coast fisherman.

Ross met and married Deborah in 1946 and they raised three children. His desire to live at home with his growing family prompted him to quit fishing. He then became a plant manager and bought and packed floral evergreens for Callison Evergreens until his retirement in 1985.

His retirement years were packed with activity. He was an exceptional artist at wood-working, wood-carving and decorative painting. He learned to speak and write Norwegian, the language of his parents, and was an active member of the Sons of Norway. Ross will also be fondly remembered for the gardens and planters filled with flowers that he carefully attended every summer. Ross also possessed musical talents: singing “just like Bing Crosby”, playing the accordion, and yodeling! His kindness and generosity throughout his life affected everyone who knew him.

A celebration of Ross’ life will be held June 2, 2007 at 1:30 pm at the Comox Yacht Club, Comox, B.C. (below the Black Fin Restaurant near the govt. wharf). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
