December 10, 1918 - March 12, 2021
We are sad to announce the passing of Frances Ruth Dickson, who passed away peacefully at Comox Valley Seniors Village on March 12, 2021 at the age of 102. Ruth leaves behind three children, June (Don), Doug (Leslie) and Craig (Deborah), seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George in March, 1997.
Ruth was born in Glasgow, Scotland to James and Frances Thomson (née West). In 1926 her family emigrated to Canada and settled in Alticane, Saskatchewan, where the family lived until Ruth was 18.
The family then moved to Vancouver, where Ruth met and married George in July, 1941. George and Ruth moved to Sayward on Vancouver Island where they lived until 1950, then moving to Nitinat logging camp just north of Lake Cowichan.
In 1955 the family moved to Duncan, where they lived at Fairbridge until 1962. Ruth and George then moved the family to their new home on Lakes Road in Duncan. In 2001 Ruth moved to Comox, where she became fully engaged in her art work.
Ruth regretted that the economics of the Great Depression made it impossible for her to continue her education when she was young, but in later years she took many painting, English literature and creative writing courses, studying Fine Arts at the University of Victoria for three years. As many of you know, Ruth was a prolific painter. She held an exhibition at the Pearl Ellis Gallery in Comox to celebrate her 90th birthday, and again to celebrate her 95th birthday. She also wrote several volumes of poetry and short stories, and autobiographies about her young life in Canada and her years in Sayward and Nitinat.
The family would like to thank the Staff of Comox Valley Seniors Village for their care during her final days.
