Ruth Mary Scott (nee Lawrence), 93, of Comox, British Columbia, died peacefully on Saturday, December 28th, 2019.
Ruth was born in the seaside town of Poole, Dorset, England in 1926. Her father's cousin was D.H. Lawrence - although she never mentioned it after a girlfriend told her "it was nothing to be proud of." She joined the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS, 'Wrens') at 19, and trained as a radio mechanic. While she was stationed in the North of Scotland with the Fleet Air Arm, she met the love of her life, Alastair Scott (died 2015). They were married for 67 years, raised four children (David, Susan, Alison and Nancy), and welcomed two grandchildren (Andrew and Willow). In addition to being a wife and mother, she was a daughter (the primary caregiver to her mother who lived to be 100), sister (Reginald and Margaret) and aunt.
Ruth was warm and funny and enjoyed many lasting friendships. As her husband Alastair often acknowledged, she created a life that was rich with friends, the arts and travel. It was she who decided that they should learn to square dance as young immigrants to Canada and take Opera Appreciation courses as new retirees. She jumped at the chance to travel to Russia and Japan in the early 1970's, and many, many other places around the world. Together Ruth and Al were active in the United Church in Comox, Parksville, Belleville, Ottawa and Peterborough.
Ruth loved living in British Columbia - which is no surprise for someone with an artist's eye for landscape and an appreciation for warm, friendly people. The family would like to thank all those at Berwick who did so much to make it Ruth's home. And thanks to Colleen Hussey, Marlene, Crystal and the staff at North Island Hospital who helped make her last few weeks more comfortable. Special thanks to Dr. Howard for so many years of wonderful care.
She will be missed.
