October 14, 1928 - February 11, 2021
Sheila gently passed away on February 11, 2021 with her daughter by her side.
She is survived by Gina Meijer (Paul) of Victoria and Moira Newsom (Quinn) of Cumberland and her six grandchildren: Miranda, Andrew and Tori, Rylee, Willow and Jasmin.
Sheila was a spark and people were drawn to her light. Even in her 90s, she was optimistic and joyful, and always up for a game of cards. She moved through the world with dignity, grace, and a fantastic sense of humour.
Born Sheila Drummond on October 14, 1928, she grew up in Coatbridge, Scotland with her sister Myrette. She had a beautiful soprano voice, was a talented dancer and joined the local operatic society in her 20's, where she met her future husband.
Sheila married Bob Sturgeon in 1956 and they emigrated to Canada a year later with $50 in their pocket. Sheila used her comptometer training to land a job quickly at the American Can Co. in Vancouver.
During those early years in their new country, they did their best to adapt to the Canadian way by fishing, camping and exploring BC. The couple settled in Coquitlam and started the first generation of the Canadian branch of the family.
Sheila took pride in her home, always anticipating dad might announce a surprise dinner party. She worked at the school district #43 office, and focussed on family. The books were balanced, the towels were ironed, and the house was always filled with music.
In 1981, Sheila and Bob retired to Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island. With her boundless energy, she soon bought Gemini Dance studio, sharing her love of theatre and propelling the arts community in the Comox Valley; a legacy that is still dancing.
During her last 20 years, Sheila enjoyed the companionship of the many people she met at Celtic and theatre groups. She held committee positions, organized events, taught dance classes, performed on stage, and her feet never stopped tapping even when she had to sit down. Stoic and independent, practical and a great judge of character, Mum led her life in a way that inspired others to laugh, to care, and to put a comb through their hair.
In lieu of a public celebration of her life, her family will gather to remember. Please raise a cup of tea at 4pm one day to toast the life of this beautiful woman. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to benefit animals, forests, education, or the performing arts.
Thanks to the healthcare professionals at the North Island Hospitals for their care and compassion.
Mum: May the music you love continue to play. Your song is in our hearts forever.
