Shirley Alice

October 12, 1933

~ September 28, 2009

Shirley was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, October 12, 1933 to Bernice (nee Milner) & Lloyd Wilson. While she was an only child, her many cousins, aunts and uncles created a large and loving family.

Shirley’s love of music guided her to a Bachelor’s degree in music from Mount Allison University and then to a career as a teacher in Summerside, P.E.I. It was there that she met her lifetime love, Cliff. Shirley and Cliff celebrated their 50th Anniversary this last July. Shirley treasured that special day with Cliff, family and friends.

Her family was the greatest joy in her life; her children Elizabeth (Steve), Bruce (Karen), Andrew (Kyna), her grandchildren Jake, Keegan, Dain, Levi, Christopher, Kyle and Sean. Shirley’s family grew with the addition of foster son Hien (Marilyn) and their children Tiara, Tanya, Jayde and Adrian; as well as Steve’s children Bryan and Lindsay (Stephane) and great grandchildren Aubree and Ronan. Auntie Shirley’s clan also included many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and so very many dear cousins stretching from coast to coast; she loved them all.

Shirley taught elementary school, English as a second language and piano for over 55 years. Shirley believed that her greatest gift was not her own musical talent, but that she was able to inspire countless piano students to explore their own gifts of music.

After Cliff’s retirement from the Armed Forces, they explored the world of Antiquing, ultimately opening Aunt Shirley’s Attic. They enjoyed this time discovering treasures; she always said there was a home for ‘everything’.

Shirley treasured life and dedicated herself to many community organizations and pursuits. She was thankful for her many friends. Shirley died at home surrounded by her family and listening to her favorite music, ending an eight year battle with ovarian cancer. Thank you all for your love, prayers, and support.

A memorial service will be held at St. George’s United Church at 2pm on Saturday October 3rd, refreshments to follow.
