Sytse Hero Meihuizen, M.D.
October 12, 1918 - November 19, 2008
It is with deep sadness we announce that Sytse passed away peacefully at Cumberland Lodge, Cumberland, B.C. in the early hours Wednesday, November 19, 2008.
Sytse was born in Surabaya, Indonesia, October 12, 1918. The family returned to the Netherlands in 1921, where he was educated and obtained his medical degrees. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the Dutch Cavalry. In 1953 he immigrated to Canada and settled in British Columbia. He practiced medicine in Victoria, Revelstoke, North Vancouver and ended his long and successful career in Sayward. Upon retirement in 1993, Sytse moved to Port Alice.
He will be dearly missed and is survived by his children, Alouette, Stef, Kathleen, Robert, Barbara and James. Also survived by grandchildren Annemarijn, Martijn, Stef, Tara, William, Ethan, Marleen, Timo, Stewart and his great grandchildren, Ids, Eiso, Emma and Judith.
Thank you to all those involved in Sytse's care, including the Drs' and staff at Cumberland Lodge and Rose Klein Beekman, who's friendship and assistance with Dad over the years is greatly appreciated.
A memorial gathering will be held on December 16 at 11:00a.m. at the Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay. A luncheon will follow.
