In Loving Memory ~
It is with immense sadness that we must bid adieu to Rick, our friend, brother, and dad, after a more than two-decades battle with Huntington's. Rick will be greatly missed by his daughter Deanna Fischer (Tyler Maltais), his sister Barb Vandervlugt (Rob Frith) and her sons (James, Adam, Doug) and their families, along with so many other important friends, all who offered much love and support over the years to Rick.
Rick was born in Germany to Hannelore and Herbert Fischer (both predeceased). At the age of two, he and his parents moved to Kitchener, Ontario. After high school in Kitchener, Rick joined the Army and served in Calgary as a Radio Operator for a few years.
After leaving the Army, Rick joined his parents and sister, now in Black Creek. Shortly after arriving on Vancouver Island, Rick would begin an apprenticeship in Carpentry, which would become his profession.
Rick simply loved everything 'outdoors' including canoeing, hiking, and camping (especially, with his daughter Deanna, Rick's pride and joy), and used his other hobby, photography, to capture many of his adventures.
In addition to these pursuits, Rick would find his way to what would become his lifelong passion - climbing! Rick's climbs would include many on Vancouver Island and Squamish, Mt. Baker in Washington, and Smith Rock (Monkey Face) in Oregon. Rick's carpentry skills would also see him involved with building several climbing walls in the Comox Valley area.
We wish to thank both the care staff at CV Senior's Village, who found a special place in their hearts for Rick, and to the wonderful supportive staff and doctors at the Centre for Huntington Disease in Vancouver.
Finally, when Mount Arrowsmith warms in the summer, family and friends will celebrate Rick's 'Life Story', including an invitation to those who climbed with Rick and those who would like to help a fellow climber make his last climb.
