In Loving Memory ~

It was a perfect bluebird day on Mount Washington when Joe passed away while snowshoeing with friends on the mountain that he loved.

Joe had a very positive attitude toward life and lived it according to his motto "Treat others as you wish to be treated". He lived an active and health-focused life and took pleasure in time outdoors, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and traveling.

He also valued his time assisting folks with their problems, particularly those afflicted with addictions. He was a 30-year member of AA and very appreciative of what the organization had done for him. In return, he felt a great deal of satisfaction in passing on his knowledge and experience by mentoring others.

Joe appreciated people, and those who were friends, especially his outdoor buddies, who should take consolation in knowing that he included you in his daily journal writings and spoke of you always with love and jokes.

Joe was born in Toronto, growing up playing hockey in Belleville, Ontario, and attended Western University. He and his wife, Joyce, settled briefly in Vancouver where he began a career in labour relations with the provincial government. He then moved to private industry and was the Human Resources Manager in forestry/pulp mill operations in Gold River, Tahsis and Port Alice.

He finished his career as the Human Resources Manager of the City of Fredericton where he worked for 9 years before returning to the Island and finding a home in Courtenay in 2014.

Joe is survived by his beloved soulmate, Joyce, daughter Joslyn Haase and son-in law Joshua Haase (Victoria), sisters Theresa Lumsdon (Victoria) and Marian MacIsaac and brother-in-law Robert MacIsaac (Belleville, Ontario), brother-in-law Richard Falkowski and his wife Sally (Atlanta, Georgia), unofficial brothers Mike Devine (Nelson, BC) and George Mackie (Vancouver), along with cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. He was pre-deceased by his parents Bernadette and John Lumsdon.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Joe in the summer for family and friends to gather to retell his cryptic jokes and sing his "one-line" songs.
