Viola Mary Skapski (nee Shann)

July 3, 1914 –

August 9, 2012

Slipped quietly away on a beautiful sunny afternoon to the melody of a Beethoven Concerto.

Raised in England but adopted Richmond, BC in 1953 and the Comox Valley in 1992. Widely traveled, she led a fascinating life, lived in many places, and witnessed exciting changes over her near century.

Viola was one of a kind; a free spirit, unique, literate, loving, generous, honest, vibrant, intelligent, lively, interesting, and always ready for adventure. Those who met her didn’t forget her. She never lost the ability to view each new day as though through the eyes of a child; always observing something new. She marveled at nature, loved music, travel, babies, books, long flowing skirts, bright colours, big necklaces, and hats, but most of all her family; knitting outfits for every new baby.

Viola loved choral singing in several choirs, including the North Island Choral Society, until well into her 90s, was a member of the Naturalists Society and a regular in the libraries and book stores in the valley. She was a familiar sight cruising along the side of the streets of Courtenay on her scooter; her freedom.

Viola was predeceased by daughter Isabella (1958), husband Kornel (1990), and brother Nevill (2011). Lovingly remembered by her family; children, John (Dianne), Bo (Sandra), Rich (Bev), Vanda Lemmon (Paul), Sofie, Eveline Power (Derek) and stepson Jan, as well as 13 grandchildren and their spouses plus 10.8 great-grandchildren, cherished sister, Hebe Welbourn, and extended members overseas.

Please join us in celebration of Viola’s 98 years in this world at 2pm on August 25 at Comox United Church, 250 Beach Avenue, Comox. The memorial tribute will be followed by refreshments in the church hall.
