He taught in State Colleges in New York and California before coming to Canada in 1962. He was a member of the Power Squadron, umpired men's and children's softball and became an enthusiastic ocean kayaker. He was an avid sports fan and amateur baseball statistician, a hobby he pursued passionately until shortly before his death.
