It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Yuen Ku Gee at the Comox Valley Hospital.
Yuen was predeceased by his father Joe Jew Sing and mother Yet Cal, his older brother Ming and brother-in-law Alan.
Yuen is survived by his wife May, son Warren (Karen), grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Liam, daughter, Lisa; brothers Dick (Jenny), Rick (Barb), Dunn (Christine), sisters Pauline and Jane, sister-in-law, Nancy and many, many close family members.
Yuen was born in Wing On, Kwangtung, China. He arrived in Canada with his family, during his preteen years, settling in Lantzville, BC. After graduating from Nanaimo District Sr. Sec. High School, he soon enrolled at Malaspina College. He was very happy to pass the courses and receive his Auto Mechanics License.
He also helped his dad at the Modern Café/Restaurant in Nanaimo, as well as with his family egg producing business.
With his successful studies in Auto Mechanics, he came to Courtenay to work for Seale & Thomson (Chev-Olds) Ltd. for 11 years. Around 1973 the Motor Vehicle Inspection Station in Nanaimo opened, and he worked there for another 11 years till the station closed in 1984.
He next took an opportunity at BC Ferries to start as an oiler. He continued in engineering studies along with working on different BC Ferries ships and sailings. The sailing routes include Salt Spring/Fulford Harbour; Swartz Bay/Tsawwassen; Duke Point/Departure Bay; and finally at Comox/Powell River.
During that time, he was able to make advancements in his work positions and finally attained his First-Class Marine Engineer title with BC Ferries where he continued to work. After over 20 years with BC Ferries, Yuen retired in 2006.
Due to the current pandemic situation, there will be a very limited family gathering on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, and if you wish, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
