Can we please just ban oil tankers in Strait of Georgia?

Dear editor, I understand that a private member’s bill will be introduced to the House of Commons this month to outlaw oil tankers in Georgia Strait.

Dear editor,I understand that a private member’s bill will be introduced to the House of Commons this month to outlaw oil tankers in Georgia Strait.I urge all of your readers to contact our local MP, John Duncan, to vote for this bill.I have recently seen three of those huge, long ships in the Strait off Nanaimo. They are there to take on oil from the tar sands at Kitimat.Although the strait is 30 kilometres wide off Vancouver, it is much narrower further north. It would be very easy for one of those long tankers to go aground there! We know how treacherous those straits are. You will recall the terrible oil spill caused by the Exxon Valdez. It was only five years ago when a BC ferry went aground. It is clear from the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico how terribly damaging and destructive an oil spill can be.If each of your readers wrote or e-mailed John Duncan to vote for this timely bill, we’d have a good chance of avoiding the loss of habitat for salmon, whales, dolphins and other precious sealife.Betty Gidlof,Courtenay
