Communication, co-operation, flexibility needed in Union Bay

Dear editor, People have said to me, “Why are you running to be a UBID trustee? You are so brave to take on such a job with all of the challenges and hostility.”

Dear editor,People have said to me, “Why are you running to be a UBID trustee? You are so brave to take on such a job with all of the challenges and hostility.”And truth be told, I have done quite a bit of soul searching to determine why I want to undertake this service for my community.  It’s certainly not for the money. It boils down to my vision for the future of Union Bay and my belief that I have skills to offer and the commitment. My husband and I intend to spend the rest of our lives here helping to create the kind of community that we want to live in.Union Bay has a proud history of volunteerism through projects such as: •    Restoring and managing the community hall;•    Restoring the post office;•    Managing the boat launch;•    Building and maintaining the roadside flower gardens; •    Raising money for worthwhile causes through service clubs. Whenever there has been a need the community has rallied around.Over the past few years some of this sense of community has been lost. We need to honestly debate issues without offending each other. I want to encourage and support open and safe discussions again.    Union Bay is on the cusp of change — development is on the horizon, new people will be moving to our community. The new arrivals will need water and fire service and will want a warm reception from all of us.Kensington Island Properties brings potential for economic and social revitalization of Union Bay. The increased amenities such as a village centre with shops, a golf course, marina and seniors/affordable housing options are anticipated with keen interest. My vision of Union Bay incorporates development; it envisions prosperity and a renewed sense of community.       My vision for UBID is an open, responsive and capable local government. Nothing is to be gained from dwelling on the past. I look forward toward a positive future.  As a trustee I will work to communicate with and involve the landowners, work with newcomers, KIP, other authorities such as the Regional District and the province. I will focus on results and remain flexible to changing needs of the community.John Lennon said, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” This is why I want to be a UBID trustee.Carol Molstad,Union Bay
