Courage, humility rare characteristics

Dear editor, I did not see the editorial (dated May 4), written by the Record's editor, Mark Allan.

Dear editor,I did not see the editorial (dated May 4), written by the Record's editor, Mark Allan. Therefore I am not cognizant of the subject matter, nor the reasons behind the strong letter written by Tom Grant (record, May 23).In the past, I have myself spent time writing to Mark Allan, only to have the editor ignore my work ... cull it ... or downright refuse to print it! Other times, he has published it, and I have been grateful.I would say to Mr. Grant but two things.First, be grateful to Mr. Allan for his personal emotional security. I can only assume that Mr. Grant's letter required a sanction from the editor. In which case, Mark Allan was prepared to print something for the eyes of the Comox Valley public, knowing full well it was aimed at none other but himself. That takes courage.Second, it appears the editor has taken personal responsibility in acknowledging his failing or weakness or whatever it was.To err and make mistakes is human — and the only real mistake I know is when one doesn't learn from one's mistakes. In this, I believe Mark Allan showed humility. These two hallmark characteristics are rare in today's world.Alan Turner,Courtenay
