Forty per cent were entitled to their votes

Dear editor, Re: Harper rewarded, not punished (Record, May 6). Anne Bauman’s assertion that the Canadian electorate must be stupid to have voted for a Conservative majority government would be laughable if it wasn’t so ridiculous.

Dear editor,

Re: Harper rewarded, not punished (Record, May 6).

Anne Bauman’s assertion that the Canadian electorate must be stupid to have voted for a Conservative majority government would be laughable if it wasn’t so ridiculous.

In typical left-wing fashion, Ms. Bauman chastises the 40 per cent of the voting public who gave the Conservative party a mandate to govern, as if her own personal beliefs should supersede the will of the electorate.

While I applaud Ms. Bauman for her obvious strong beliefs in her own political ideology, to insinuate that the Conservative voter is stupid for his/her beliefs rather clearly summates the polarization of politics in this country.

I believe that the 40 per cent of Canadians who voted for strong fiscal governance, smaller government and lower taxes are as entitled to their choice as you are to yours.

Governance on pixie-dust fantasies and group hugs might suit your political stripe, Ms. Bauman, but the reality is that in our first-past-the-post system, the Conservatives garnered a strong mandate to run this country.

Instead of accusing the 40 per cent of Canadians who disagreed with you as being stupid, why not embrace the democratic process and revel in the fact that voter turnout was better than in previous elections?
