GMO debate does not belong on city council agenda

Dear editor,

I was appalled to read the report of Courtenay council debating the issue of GMO foods. As the Mayor so correctly put it, “It’s not our mandate.”

I can’t understand how this topic even got on the agenda as it had no business being there. Are we going to have a group of unqualified people telling us what food we should eat when qualified scientists can’t agree?

Council should be discussing issues like what we are going to be doing for water in the future when the population of the Valley grows another 30,000 as predicted and climate change has more effect.
