K’omoks Band grateful for recovery of artifacts

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

During a renovation of our Comox home in 2013, a native maul was unearthed when digging new foundations for the house.

We washed and cherished the item but were cautioned by numerous people that we should not tell the K’omoks Band because they’d want to “dig up our yard”. We kept the maul but we always felt that it should be returned to where it belongs. Recently, we decided to make the move to contact the local Band office to arrange the return of the maul and other small artifacts we had found on the property.

The phone call to the Band office was warm and receptive. I voiced our concern about “digging up our yard” and our fear was immediately put to rest.

The K’omoks Band Chief arrived at our home to pick up our finds and our meeting was pleasant and informative.

We would like to inform people in our community who have found native artifacts on their property, to be assured that their yards are safe. The K’omoks Band received our finds with grace and are grateful to have the pieces that are part of their heritage, passed along to them.

We encourage all people who find native artifacts to contact the Band office to have the items become part of the K’omoks Band collection where they can be archeologically inspected, identified and dated, and eventually be put on display for all to appreciate and enjoy. We learned that the K’omoks Band is working on such a presentation location for the future.

We look forward to attending on their opening day.
