Let's throw omnibus under the bus

Dear editor, This Saturday marks a national day of action against the Conservative government’s budget omnibus bill.

Dear editor,This Saturday marks a national day of action against the Conservative government’s budget omnibus bill.Events are being planned at a local level at Conservative MP’s offices in response to the “stand against the Blackmark Budget” campaign organized by leadnow.ca, an online organization that aims to, in their words “bring generations of Canadians together to achieve progress through democracy.”Our local event is at 2 p.m. at 104-576 England Ave. in Courtenay and has a “street festival” theme — bring your clever signs, colourful costumes, balloons, and musical instruments for a fun, family-friendly celebration of our democratic right to freely assemble and make our voices heard!        The public is increasingly frustrated with the Harper government’s sneaky approach to legislative change — Bill C-38 contains mostly non-budget-related legislation in its whopping 452 pages (most budgets average around 30 pages) and among other things repeals the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and the Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act, guts the Fisheries Act, and gives the government unprecedented powers to approve major projects such as pipelines and tankers, etc.Lumping all this and (much) more into a “budget” bill is an insult to our intelligence. Let them know you won’t stand for it — in defence of future generations come out on Saturday afternoon and make a creative ruckus! For more info go to http://blackmark.leadnow.ca.Claire Gilmore,Cumberland
