LETTER - Mulrooney letter shows a level of NIMBYism rarely seen before

Dear editor,

I was greatly pleased to learn of the BC Housing purchase of the Super 8 motel to support the most vulnerable in our midst with 67 units which include individual housing, laundry, meal provision and support staff.

I was however appalled by the narrow-minded response of Mr. Mulrooney’s letter to the editor last week (Courtenay business owner upset with BC Housing’s purchase of Super 8 motel). I have seldom witnessed a more NIMBY self-interest response to a community problem.

The business community as a whole has rightly been advocating for a solution to have people with addiction, poverty and mental health issues housed in some manner that gets them off the street with a chance for living a better and independent life. Mr. Mulroonery’s only issue is that this might impact his female staff, his clientele, and his bottom line for property values and a re-sale price.

Wow!

I have worked in the Comox Valley for over 15 years with the disadvantaged, and would hope the letter-writer could promote a slightly more empathetic vision and one that is beyond his own little bubble for what is a complex and ongoing issue.

Allan Morrison,

Comox
