LETTER: Liberal Party shows its true colours with dismissal of Plecas

Dear editor,

Darryl Plecas accepted the position of Speaker of the House Sept. 8.

Dear editor,

According to the article in the Sept. 12 Record, the BC Liberals have kicked Mr. Plecas out of the party because he took the role of Speaker. You quote Party president, Sharon White, saying that, “As a result [of him taking the Speaker job] the NDP government will enjoy an expanded margin of seats that will enable it to control the House for the foreseeable future….None of us are happy about these events.”

So, as I read it, the Liberals aren’t angry because they were lied to (imagine, a politician lying!) but rather they are angry because now they won’t be able to bring down the NDP government and plunge BC into another contentious and expensive election.

They are clearly showing their contempt for democracy and, I suggest, their contempt for British Columbians by stating outright what is their primary goal - to be in power themselves. In case we forgot, this craven attempt to maintain power was also their primary goal in putting forward the plagiarized, wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing Throne Speech earlier this year.

To further reinforce how tone-deaf the BC Liberals are, Ms. White goes on to say, “…we pride ourselves on…having respectful debates….” Of course, she clarifies that she doesn’t mean respectful debates within the Legislature; she means within the Liberal Party itself, though I must say they haven’t been very respectful to Mr. Plecas.

I congratulate Mr. Plecas on his courage. It is good to know there is one BC Liberal who has our interests at heart, rather than his own.
