McRae’s seat is not his, nor the NDP’s, but ours

Don McRae

Dear editor,

For more then a month I have read with some amusement, but more often disgust, letters that have been submitted by none other than what one could define as the local B.C Liberal steno pool. Clearly there must be some sort of B.C Liberal war room or anti-recall campaign committee behind these letters as the same half dozen or so authors keep repeating the same talking points over and over again.

Last spring many of these same authors were espousing the wonders of the HST, how it was going to lower prices, create jobs, and how we should all learn to like it; some still are.

Has any of this been proven to be true? Perhaps, if you live in a border town in Washington State or Alberta.

Just for the record I am not, nor have I ever been, a member of the NDP; I have never contributed to the party nor have I ever voted for an NDP candidate.

As a matter of fact I supported and participated in the 1998 recall campaign against NDP MLA and cabinet minister Evelyn Gillespie.

While the issues are different is some ways my reasons remain the same; we have a government whose members exhibit arrogance, condescension, and contempt for the electorate, that is spinning out of control.

Like it or not, MLA Don McRae is a full and willing partner in this same government, he not only votes according to the wishes of the leadership in Victoria but he enthusiastically promotes the policies of the Liberal party leadership at home.

The basic premise behind a representative democracy is that a representative is elected by the people to represent the interests of those people to the government. a member of the legislature or the parliament is supposed to work for us, they are in effect our employee, we are their employers.

Regrettably our current MLA, Don McRae, has forgotten who his employers are, he has chosen to represent the interests of his party, its leader, and the government instead of the people.

Don McRae regards the Comox Valley constituency as his seat, the B.C Liberals regard it as a B.C Liberal seat, the B.C NDP once regarded it as a NDP seat, but it belongs to you. If you do not like where this government is going support the recall and take your seat back.

A. Foster,

Courtenay
