'Still plenty of bickering' ahead about new hospitals

Dear editor, I saw plenty of kudos to VIHA and photo ops for politicians as they made the announcement of funding for two new hospitals.

Dear editor,Well, I saw plenty of kudos to VIHA and precious photo ops for the MLA and other politicians as they made the long (and I do mean looong) awaited announcement of funding for two new hospitals for the North Island. Not one properly funded regional hospital, but two smaller shiny boxes in which to put our old crap. Well done! Huzzah! Bully for us all!Now there is the issue of rezoning (with full public process of course and lets toss in a council that is “fairly supportive” of the chosen location), unresolved design control issues by the city that are deemed “critical” (interesting choice of words, eh?), transportation and traffic issues, requests for qualifications for contractors, request for proposal process from those shortlisted (which takes usually almost year to complete). Then we will no doubt have VIHA look at which services will go where — so that both communities feel they are getting their little slice of the pie. This of course should be done with input from the health care providers before the design plan is done as each specialty usually requires different space/area design. But that likely won’t happen in our “heady, decade-long rush” to get these buildings up so those same politicians and uninformed public can get that ribbon cutting onto the front page.No doubt the 19,000 who signed the petition put forward by the Citizens for Quality Health Care in 2008 for quashing a regional hospital plan will once again be called upon to slow up the process further by opposing how the hospitals are built and run by clinging to a health care model that is useless.Government will continue their shameful funding and access to appropriate and cost-effective care for homeless, seniors and hospice patients. Any increase in beds in these two little hospitals will be filled (as they are now) with patients who should be cared for in more appropriate settings. Your front page story states that “much needs to happen before shovels.” Translated: “Don’t get too excited — there is still plenty of bickering and waiting to come….”Well done! Huzzah! Bully for us all! Barbara Mellin, RN,Comox
