What purpose does public shaming serve?

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

Mayor Jangula, who in his many years of public service no doubt has had his mouth filled with blood from biting his tongue more than once, chooses to respond to an email with perhaps an ill-turned phrase or two.

Perhaps he pressed “send” prior to a cooling off moment. I’m not supporting the situation, merely providing a possible explanation.

Instead of attempting to resolve the issue or dampening the flame, the recipient and her partner choose to take what was probably initially private correspondence between two individuals (let the lawyers argue whether or not it was in the public domain) and post it to social media. Not an unexpected response in our time, but to what avail?

Public shaming, an attempt to bully, or just getting attention? It is clear that the tone may have been interpreted in a way that the mayor may not have intended, but once one presses “send”…

Another councillor feels the need to weigh in by giving us some insight into his personal financial situation.

Tempest in a teapot, or just a slow news day?
