The Comox Valley Pool League has wrapped up its fourth season.
Each year the interest in organized league play continues to grow and the competition is there for all skill levels. This season the A Division's skill level increased as players continued to step up their game.
Players say this wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t have such a great league operator in Rose Kantor. "She takes her time organizing a league that fits all skill levels of play and puts in the time running many events to help players improve their skills. She is one dedicated lady to the sport of pool in the Valley," a CVPL player stated.
"I’m grateful for all the compliments the players give me for a job well done, but what really makes me happy is when I see all their smiling faces at the banquet cheering," Kantor said. "I know then I’ve accomplished what I started out to do four years ago. I couldn’t have done it without all of the players. Thank you for making my dream a reality!"
This season, playoffs were a double knockout, no handicaps for the A Division and double knockout, handicapped for the B Division. Competition was strong in both divisions with most matches coming down to the last game.
Finishing first in the league was last year’s playoff champions Chalk-A-Holics, and going into playoffs every team was out to take them down. And take them down is what the Sharpshooters (who play out of the Avalanche) did.
Finishing third were the Cue Fellas with Sunnydale Sliders fourth. Fifth and sixth were Choc-O-Lot and Sociables, seventh and eighth were Are We High? and Classics.
There are also new champions in the B Division, Chalk-N-Awe who play out of Chalk Lounge in the Westerly. Second were La Masse, third Cue- Tease, fourth Bridge Patrol, fifth and sixth Odds R and 3 Sticks & A Rack.
"I believe the most important award of the season is the Good Sportsmanship Award," Kantor said. "When players play the sport by showing their best sportsmanship during every match it creates a fun league for all. This season the players voted in Choc-O-Lot – good job everyone!"
Greg and Sandra Shelvey took home Top Lady and Top Male in the league. Dominick Grenier had the Most Consecutive Wins with 20 and Kyle Little was the Most Improved Player. The Butt Head, a new yearly award all in good fun, went to Johnny Cearns.
Each season the league wouldn’t be so successful without the support of its sponsors: Avalanche Bar & Grill, Labatt’s, Morningstar Golf Course, The Bridge, Island Honda, Vicky’s Form, Chalk in the Westerly, Delicado’s, Jump Camp, Islander Pizza, Kelsey at ReThink Designs, CV Fitness, Apollo Tattoo, Ski Tak Hut, Crown Isle Golf Resort, Al McDougall, Sunnydale Golf Course, Kal Tire and C.A.P. Billiards Ltd.
"Thanks to the Avalanche for the wonderful awards banquet dinner they sponsored for the fourth year. Chris from Yiamas Greek Taverna cooked the dinner," Kantor added.
The CVPL Summer Singles League goes every Wednesday at the Avalanche and winter team events start up Sept. 5. For details, contact Kantor at 250-218-8819 or crazyaboutpool@shaw.ca, check out the league website comox.pplms.ca or find them on Facebook.
