Capoeira is a martial art of Brazilian descent that combines elements of self-defence and dance.
The Brazilian Cultural Foundation (BCF) and Axe Capoeira Comox Valley are celebrating 15 years of Afro-Brazilian Culture in the Comox Valley with Intercultural Celebration and Batizado and Troco de Corda events.
The celebration will take place over the weekend of March 15- 17, 2024 at multiple venues for both registered participants and public.
Headed up by Axé Capoeira Comox Valley’s leader, Professora Onça (Alicia Fennell), the Batizado and Troca de Corda has attracted over 120 participants from all over B.C. Axé Capoeira students participating will have the opportunity to learn from an international array of 18 guest instructors from across Canada, USA and Brazil including six masters of Capoeira. On Sunday, students will showcase their dance and musical talents while also being presented with the next capoeira belts in their journey by playing against one of the masters. Spectators are welcome starting at noon at L’école Au-cœur-de-l’île in Comox.
Axé Capoeira Comox Valley is also offering an introductory family-friendly community class to the public to learn some of the basics of the art of capoeira. Interested participants are welcome to drop in on Saturday at 2 p.m. at école Au-cœur-de-l’île.
“Cultural events such as these are such an important part of every community as they bring a sense of togetherness and enrich our lives in so many ways,” said Fennell. “They also help to bring underprivileged artists out of poverty and into communities that greatly need their cultural and ancestral knowledge. Indigenous cultures have been known to heal and transform.”
The Brazilian Cultural Foundation would also like to recognize these events would not be possible without the support of their generous community partners and contributors.
The Brazilian Cultural Foundation is deeply grateful for all of the support from the community and respectfully acknowledges that we live and work on the unceded traditional territory of the K’òmoks First Nation.
(A Saturday evening cultural exchange between the Kumugwe Cultural Society and the Brazilian Cultural Foundation is sold out.)
