The Comox Valley Sports Centre was the place to be on the afternoon of Sunday, June 3.

Cumberland's own roller derby team, the Brick House Betties, played a nail biter game against one of Terminal City Roller Girls' house teams, The Riot Girls from Vancouver.

This was a very close roller derby game from start to finish. At half time, the Brick House Betties were winning 82-59. During the second half, the Riot Girls fought back to take the lead. In the last minute, the Riot Girls' jammer (point scorer) received a penalty which gave the Betties a chance to win.

“Our jammer skated like mad, scoring 26 points which would have won the game for us except in the last few seconds the Riot Girls' jammer got out of the penalty box to sneak through, scoring four points which ensured their win,” a Brick House Betties spokesperson explained.  The final score was 163-159 for the Riot Girls.

"The Brick House Betties thank all the fans who came out to support us, our volunteers, officials from the Coastal Call Monitors, and our sponsors, Rick's Plumbing, Bayview Chiropractic, Family Counselling Comox, Toneff Funeral Services, The Waverley Hotel, McKinnon Photography, and Artform Photographics," the spokesperson said.
