The Brick House Betties are at it again.

Cumberland's own roller derby team is hosting the third open scrimmage in a series this Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Cumberland Recreation Institute.  There will be skaters representing six Island teams and one Powell River squad.

"This is your chance to come and watch some of the best players on the Island skate it out on the track," a Brick House Betties spokesperson said. "Roller derby is a female-driven sport that is sweeping across Canada and the world.

"Toronto hosted the first-ever Roller Derby World Cup in which 13 countries participated and Canada took silver," the spokesperson noted. "This is not the roller derby of the past with choreographed hits and fights.

This is an athletic, competitive, full-contact sport with real hits."

Doors open at 11 a.m. and the first whistle blows at 12 p.m. Admission for spectators is by donation. Food bank donations are also greatly appreciated. This is a family friendly event. "Come to the Cumberland Recreation Institute and support Island derby!" the team spokesperson said.

"If you can't make it but would like to watch you can do so via the Internet on www.loudandalivetv.com. The Brick House Betties are always looking for  people who want to get involved either by joining the team as a player, referee, non-skating official or volunteers. Feel free to contact us at www.brickhousebetties.com or follow us on Facebook."
