Busy darts season drawing to a close

The Courtenay Elks Lodge and the Comox Legion recently hosted their respective Provincial dart championships.

In Courtenay on March18-20, 30 hours of action took place at the Lodge on 6th Street. Twenty men and 16 ladies from the Interior, Lower Mainland and the Island participated in their respective events; men’s and ladies singles, men’s and ladies doubles, mixed doubles, men’s and ladies quads and mixed quads.

It is only the top eight men and top eight ladies who played in the singles that will advance to the Nationals in Yellowknife in May.

Locals advancing to the Nationals are Pam Waterfield, Ernie Linden and Peter Greaves.

The event was opened by the B.C. Elks Associations' president Debbie Sallenback and the Courtenay Lodge Exalted Ruler Bill Glowasky who presented Sallenback with a souvenir plate from the City of Courtenay.

At the Comox Legion on March 26-27, 68 players took part in the BC/Yukon championships. This was only three events, singles, doubles and teams, all went well under the supervision of Draw Masters Pricilla Englund and Wendy Jackson.

The tournament was opened with piper Dave Logan (from Branch #17) leading the players into the venue. Comox Mayor Paul Ives welcomed the participants to the Valley and wished them well in the events. Also on hand was Comrade Dave Munroe, BC/Yukon Sports chairman.

The singles event was won by John Markham of Branch #6 Cloverdale, the doubles event went to John and his partner Jim Hooker, and Branch #24 from Cranbrook took the team event. Only the winners of the three events move onto the Royal Canadian Dominion Command Championships in Aurora in May.

The locals from Branch #17 Courtenay only came close in the team event, tied for third place with two other Branches whom played to break the tie only to place Courtenay fourth.

"Many accolades go to the Comox Legion committee that put the event together, too many to mention, but thank you all so very much for the time and effort put forth for a successful event," an event spokesperson said.
